The Dropt Valley, Valley of Fortified Towns

Over fifteen centuries ago, when talking of the Dropt valley, the Latin poet Sidonius Appolinaris called it « a vision of paradise » …

From its source in the Périgord, the Dropt meanders through the Guyenne and Entre-deux-Mers regions, until it reaches the Garonne river, having made its way through calm, measured and harmonious countryside.

Inhabited since the earliest days, the Dropt valley is steeped in history.  It is here that the Kings of France and England faced each other for over three hundred years.  This period has left its mark on the area, with an exceptionally rich cultural heritage: medieval villages, churches, abbeys, chapels and castles, fortifications, mills and bridges … 
And then the fortified towns themselves, the « bastides », « New towns of the High Middle Ages », almost twenty in all, among the most beautiful of the south west …
